January 2: St. Sylvester's Day, Signs and What Not to Do.
According to ТСН: Tomorrow, January 2, in the Orthodox calendar, is the day of remembrance of St. Sylvester, Pope. He came from a humble Roman family. The exact date of his birth is unknown, but traditionally it is considered to be the end of the 3rd — beginning of the 4th century. Before being elected pope, he served as a priest in Rome. Although there is little information about his education, Sylvester is regarded as a man of deep faith and piety.
Sylvester became pope in 314 after a period of persecution of the Church. His pontificate is remembered for peace and focus on strengthening the internal structure of the Church. The most famous aspect of his life is his connection with Constantine the Great.
According to legends, Sylvester baptized Emperor Constantine, although modern historians believe that the actual baptism took place only at the end of Constantine's life, around 337, and possibly by another priest.
The pope supported the emperor in his political and church endeavors, especially in proclaiming Christianity as the official religion of the empire. Legend has it that Sylvester received generous gifts from Constantine: several churches in Rome and the right to freedom of faith for Christians.
Although he personally did not participate in the Council of Nicaea in 325, he sent his legates to represent the papal position. The council affirmed the fundamental dogmas of faith, including the Nicene Creed, which became key for Christianity. St. Sylvester is venerated as the patron saint of those afflicted with plague and fever, possibly due to legends of miracles attributed to him. St. Sylvester I died in 335 in Rome, and his body was buried in the cemetery of St. Peter, where a basilica was later built, which became part of modern Vatican City.
