Epiphany January 6: Who doctors categorically prohibit from swimming in the hole.
According to ТСН: On Tuesday, Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, one of the customs of which is immersion in the hole.
Since ancient times, Ukrainians believed in the healing power of blessed water, considering that swimming on this day ensures health for the whole year.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine emphasizes that swimming in the hole is not a way of 'washing away' sins or obtaining special blessings.
Recommendations from doctors
Doctors advise only physically prepared people to dive into the hole. For this, you should choose specially designated bodies of water.
People better off avoiding swimming:
with cardiovascular diseases
who have respiratory diseases (previous pneumonia, runny nose, otitis, asthma)
who have diabetes
suffering from epilepsy
with skin conditions.
Before diving, it is not recommended to consume alcoholic beverages, as this can lead to hypothermia. Diving is categorically prohibited for people with cardiovascular diseases and frequent fluctuations in blood pressure, including hypertension.
The State Emergency Service recommends entering the water only in specially equipped places. They also emphasize: 'under no circumstances should you dive into the water; you must enter the hole slowly and carefully.'
After swimming, it is important to quickly remove wet clothing, rub yourself with a towel, and change clothes. This will help reduce the cold load. Clothes and shoes should be dry, warm, and loose. You can also drink hot tea.
Let us remind you, January 5 is celebrated as the Eve of the Epiphany, which prepares Ukrainians for the main holiday - Epiphany.
The Baptism of the Lord is not only a spiritual holiday but also a time when Ukrainians feel strongly about ancient traditions. Immersion in cold water symbolizes purification and renewal of strength, but it is advisable to remember about health and safety, as on this day, risking your well-being can not only spoil the joy of the holiday but also harm yourself. Take into account the recommendations of doctors and spend this day responsibly.
