How to decline 'metro', 'sitre' and 'kino'? A linguist explained the difference between these words.

According to the current Ukrainian spelling, nouns of foreign origin ending in -o, such as 'metro' and 'kino', are not declined. However, by tradition, the words 'vino', 'palto' and 'sitre' are declined.

Philologist Olga Vasilieva noted that each language is strong in how it adapts foreign forms to its own laws. Therefore, she believes that both 'metro' and 'kino' should be declined. However, this is not currently established in the spelling rules.

Olga Vasilieva explained that in her book 'Spelling - the corset of language', Iryna Farion presents the declension of the word 'Toronto' in the Ukrainian diaspora's language, but this norm is not established in the current spelling rules.

Earlier, Olga Vasilieva talked about the correct spelling of website names, social networks, and messengers in Ukrainian. She also emphasized the most common mistakes that Ukrainians often make in expressions and words.

The linguist noted that not all borrowed words require replacement. For example, 'feedback' can be replaced with 'zvorotnyi zv'yazok', but the replacement of 'lifehack' is more difficult.
