What Holiday is Tomorrow
On December 28, believers celebrate Day of Remembrance for the 2000 Martyrs who were burned in Nicomedia. In the years 303-304, Emperors Diocletian and Maximian began the Great Persecution of Christians, which was the largest in the history of the Roman Empire. Christians were forced to renounce their faith, offer sacrifices to pagan gods, and temples and holy books were destroyed. A refusal meant torture or death. According to ecclesiastical tradition, about 2000 Christians – men, women, and children – gathered in one of the temples in Nicomedia for a common prayer. Soldiers surrounded the building and set the temple on fire by order of the authorities, without allowing the believers to escape.
December 28 is also celebrated as International Cinema Day. On this day in 1895, brothers August and Louis Lumière held the first public paid film screening in the world in the basement of the 'Grand Café' on Boulevard Montmartre in Paris. This event is considered the birth of cinema. The audience watched several short films, including the famous 'Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station'. Reports suggest that the movement of the train on the screen impressed the audience so much that some viewers instinctively recoiled and confused the image with reality.
Moreover, December 28 is Calendar Day. In many cultures, the calendar has a sacred significance, and the days of the solstices and equinoxes are regarded as special moments for transitions and new beginnings. Calendar Day reminds us that time is the most valuable resource, and the calendar is merely a tool that helps us live it consciously.
Additionally, December 28 is celebrated as Card Game Day. This date symbolizes the end of the year, which is traditionally associated with leisure, family, and friend gatherings when card games become part of the common recreation. Playing cards appeared in China around the 9th century and later spread to the Middle East and Europe. Already in the Middle Ages, cards were popular among both nobles and common people.
December 28 is a day when various traditions and celebrations intertwine. The veneration of martyrs, the celebration of the achievements of cinema, and the reminder of the significance of time in our lives give this day a special importance. And the tradition of card games adds warmth and joy during the winter holidays.
