Russian Strikes on Energy Grid Leave Kyivstar with 40–60% of Cell Towers Unstable.
Widespread Power Loss Across Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Following large-scale Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure in nine Ukrainian regions, the telecom operator Kyivstar has lost stable power for 40–60% of its network. This has severely impacted operations, with just over 1,000 of its 16,500 base stations currently disconnected. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian energy grid.
Network Status and Resilience Measures
CEO Oleksandr Komarov reported that in some regions, the operator is facing what it classifies internally as a total power blackout. Despite this, he noted that less than 10% of the overall network is down. Komarov emphasized that the core network is protected for 72 hours and expressed confidence the company could sustain operations even longer.
To support network functionality, Kyivstar can mobilize more than 2,000 staff members to respond swiftly to challenges caused by the unstable power supply. The situation remains difficult, but the company continues working to maintain communication services for its subscribers.
This situation underscores the immense challenges Ukrainian companies face due to the war and its impact on critical national infrastructure.
The loss of stable electricity significantly complicates not only telecommunications but also daily life for the population. Power limitations can affect other sectors like business and public services, demanding rapid solutions from both the state and private sector to maintain stability across the country.
