Belgium's F-35 Acquisition Delays Delivery of 30 F-16 Jets to Ukraine.
Delays in F-16 Fighter Jet Deliveries
According to TSN.ua: Belgium has yet to deliver the 30 F-16 fighter jets it pledged to Ukraine. The holdup stems from Belgium's own air force modernization, as the country prioritizes receiving new F-35 jets for its national defense. To date, not a single aircraft from this commitment has reached the Ukrainian Air Force.
The timeline for transferring these jets to Ukraine is repeatedly being pushed back. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has promised that the first four aircraft will be delivered by the end of 2024. Belgium plans to fully phase out its own F-16 fleet by the end of 2028, with the final deliveries to Ukraine now expected in 2029. This extended timeline underscores the complex logistics of transferring advanced military hardware during a major conflict.
Training and Maintenance Hurdles
Further complications arise with the training of Ukrainian pilots, a process that is inherently complex and time-consuming. As noted by Belgian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Herta De Decker,
"From the outset, the Defense Ministry stated that the operational needs of our own air force must first be met."
Despite the delays in supplying its own jets, Belgium is providing Ukraine with technical maintenance support for F-16s received from other allied nations. This cooperation continues, even as the transfer of new aircraft faces obstacles.
The postponement of Belgium's F-16 deliveries could impact the combat readiness of the Ukrainian Air Force, which has an urgent need for modern aircraft. The lengthy pilot training process may further delay plans to enhance Ukraine's aviation capabilities. However, the ongoing maintenance collaboration between Belgium and Ukraine is crucial for sustaining the operational readiness of existing jets until the new fighters arrive.
