Drone Strikes Russian-Oil Tanker Near the Bosphorus Strait.
Assault on the Altura Tanker
According to TSN.ua: An unidentified drone targeted the Turkish-flagged tanker Altura, which was carrying one million barrels of Russian Urals crude oil. The incident occurred roughly 15 nautical miles from the Bosphorus Strait. At the time of the attack, the Suezmax-class vessel was surrounded by three Turkish naval ships, highlighting the heightened security measures in place around the ship.
The Altura, which is subject to sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom and the European Union, became the target of an assault amid rising regional tensions. Notably, Russia has been known to employ GPS spoofing technology to conceal vessel movements, a tactic potentially linked to this event.
Escalating Regional Conflicts
Interestingly, on the same day—March 25—an attack targeted seaports in the Leningrad region, as confirmed by regional governor Alexander Drozdenko. Air defense forces reportedly intercepted 33 drones, underscoring the intensity of military operations in that area.
The strike on the Altura tanker serves as further evidence of escalating conflicts in maritime zones involving the transport of strategic cargo. International observers have expressed concern over the situation surrounding the tanker, which highlights the risks currently faced by sea trade routes.
This incident underscores the growing tension in a region where competition for control over energy resources is intensifying. Targeting a vessel transporting Russian oil may signal new phases in the escalation of conflicts between states participating in global energy markets. Given the geopolitical landscape, such events could have implications not only for international security but also for the stability of global energy markets.
