Blackout in Berlin: Leftist group claims responsibility for sabotage on energy networks.
According to ТСН: A large-scale blackout occurred in the south-western district of Berlin due to the arson of critical infrastructure, leaving tens of thousands of residents without electricity. The city authorities organized heating points, and Ukrainians opened a 'Point of Indomitability' to assist those affected.
Situation with power outages
On January 3, Berlin faced a serious power outage affecting 45,000 households and 2,200 businesses in the neighborhoods of Nikolassee, Zehlendorf, Wannsee, and Lichterfeld. Only in the night of January 4 did energy workers manage to partially stabilize the situation, restoring electricity supply for approximately 7,000 consumers. However, another 38,000 households and over 2,000 companies remained without power.
Specialists are trying to find a temporary solution to replace high-voltage cables, a process that takes about five weeks. The network operator Stromnetz Berlin states that complete restoration of electricity supply is not planned until the second half of January 8th.
Reasons for the blackout
The accident occurred early in the morning of January 3 when a cable bridge above the Teltow Canal, supplying the Lichterfeld power plant, caught fire. The police consider the incident to be arson.
'A confession letter was received by the state security service responsible for political crimes, the authenticity of which is currently being verified', the law enforcement officials stated.
The authorities confirmed that this incident is considered an 'intentional act.' The left-wing group Vulkan claimed responsibility for the sabotage, stating that their goal was 'fossil energy.'
The police believe the claim is credible as the group had previously committed similar acts. The mayor and senator characterized the arson as terrorism, while the interior minister assured that it was a targeted attack.
Impact on the lives of Berlin residents
The lack of electricity has led to significant complications. Many heating systems are not working, shops are closing, and law enforcement is warning of potential communication disruptions. The city authorities opened heating points in churches and administrative buildings for those in need of warmth.
Many elderly people cannot reach the heating centers as elevators are not working.
'In regular apartment buildings live many elderly people... What is a lonely 87-year-old woman supposed to do?'one resident shared her concerns.
Rescue services urge caution with alternative sources of heat and light. Social media users are actively comparing this situation with blackouts in Ukraine.
Current situation in Berlin
As of January 6, about 25,500 households and 1,200 businesses remained without electricity. The power outages have sparked widespread outrage on social media as people question the protection of critical infrastructure.
Users express concern and continue to discuss possible options for external intervention:
'Perhaps with this blackout, (the Germans - ed.) will start to realize that war is closer than one would like', noted one of the residents of Berlin.
Actions of Ukrainians in Berlin
The Ukrainian community in Berlin has created a 'Point of Indomitability' to assist local residents. This center, equipped with alternative power supply, provides opportunities to charge phones and use household appliances.
'We say: 'It's okay that the light was turned off for a few days — similar situations happen in Ukraine. Everything will be fine.'one of the project initiators emphasized.
Tension and panic among the population are related to the sudden outages that are not typical for this region.
