According to ТСН: Rail services between the UK and continental Europe were halted during the festive season due to a technical failure in the tunnel under the English Channel, leading to the cancellation of most services and transport chaos.

The collapse was caused by a failure in the overhead power supply and the breakdown of a Le Shuttle freight train right in the tunnel.

The Eurostar company was forced to cancel almost all daytime services from London, warning passengers not to come to the stations.

Deadlock in Folkestone

The most difficult situation has developed at the UK terminal in Folkestone, from where trains carrying cars depart. Hundreds of drivers found themselves trapped: after passing passport control and entering the French security zone, they are forced to stay in place as the trains are not running and cannot return to the UK.

Situation at the Stations

The situation at the stations is escalating. At St Pancras station in London, police removed a man who was shouting at the railway staff:

“I just want to know if I will see my family.”
People have been waiting in line for over six hours.

“We are basically stranded,”
said Alison Raebie to reporters, whose one-day trip to Belgium was canceled.

Phil Groves, a British NHS worker heading to Paris for New Year’s, expressed frustration over the lack of information:

“We are standing in a giant queue, and no one is saying anything.”

Alternative Routes

Operators are urging people to postpone their travels. Those who cannot wait are advised to take the ferry service. The Port of Dover reported that ferries are operating as usual and have available spaces for extra passengers.

Despite serious problems with rail connections, alternative routes such as ferries allow passengers to find a way out of the difficult situation. For those planning to travel, it is important to keep an eye on information from transport companies and plan their routes in advance. For now, passengers have to endure inconveniences while work continues to resolve the breakdowns.
