Distance Education for Children with Special Needs: How the Optima Program Works

According to ТСН: Is distance education suitable for children with special educational needs? We explored this topic by talking to representatives of the largest distance school in Ukraine, 'Optima,' which has created one of the best programs for such children - 'Towards the Future with OPTIMism!'.

Why is distance learning the best option for any child?

In Ukraine, many children receive distance education. More than 20,000 students are currently enrolled in 'Optima.' Parents choose this format due to its convenience, individual approach, safety, and high level of interactivity.

These factors are especially important for children with special needs. Why?

  • Absence of emotional overload during learning.

  • The ability to learn at their own pace.

  • All materials are available on a modern educational platform.

  • Comfortable and safe learning environment.

  • Individual approach from teachers.

  • Many opportunities for additional development and socialization.

Thus, standard distance learning already significantly meets special educational needs, and 'Optima' has created a special program for such children.

'Towards the Future with OPTIMism' is a serious approach to inclusivity.

The reasons for special educational needs can be varied: complex family circumstances, health conditions, or the consequences of war. Such children require more attention, care, and support.

'Optima' has developed an educational system that allows children with special needs to get the most out of their education:

  • Experienced teachers create individual development programs.

  • Materials are presented in various ways: through video lessons, notes, infographics, games, and tests - all to make learning interesting and understandable.

  • Classes include methods developed by specialists in neuropsychology.

  • A tutor supports, motivates, and accompanies the child.

  • If necessary, classes with a speech therapist and/or psychologist take place.

  • Teachers and psychologists are always in touch with parents to improve the learning process.

These opportunities create comfortable conditions for most children. 'Optima' has also emphasized the importance of accessibility. Many Ukrainian schoolchildren are temporarily living abroad and cannot learn in their native language. Therefore, in the 2025/2026 academic year, together with the charitable foundation 'For the Future of Children,' the school launched a program of free education for many categories of students abroad. Thanks to the foundation's support, hundreds of children can learn remotely and maintain a connection with Ukraine, even while far from it.

Thus, distance education not only suits children with special educational needs but also provides them with additional comfort and opportunities for development. This format of education makes quality Ukrainian education closer and more accessible to all children, regardless of their location.
