Attempted Arson of a Synagogue in Chernivtsi: Police Detained the Offender.
According to ТСН: In Sadgora, a suburb of Chernivtsi, an unidentified man entered the synagogue, collected religious books, and set them on fire. The police quickly detained the offender at the scene.
According to the United Jewish Community of Ukraine, the incident occurred when the synagogue guard went outside for a brief moment. The offender took advantage of this moment and entered the sanctuary, which holds great significance for the Hasidic dynasty of Sadigura.
Details of the Incident
It is preliminarily known that the detained individual is likely to have mental health issues. It is also noted that about a month ago he attempted to set fire to a local church.
"The building is one of the central sanctuaries of the Sadigura dynasty, founded by Rabbi Israel of Ruzhyn. The synagogue was built about 180 years ago, renovated in 2017, and is considered one of the most important structures in the Hasidic world,"
– noted the community.
At present, official information from the police regarding the legal qualification of the incident and the state of damage to this historical sanctuary is awaited.
This case has drawn attention to the safety of religious institutions in Ukraine, as a flare-up of hatred can threaten the peaceful coexistence of different cultures and faiths. Law enforcement is expected to take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
