The Ethnographer Revealed the True Story of Saint Nicholas: What Distinguishes Him from Santa.
According to ТСН: Saint Nicholas Day has deep roots in Ukraine and has played an important role in the upbringing of children for many centuries. This holiday was traditionally considered 'secret' — children would find gifts under their pillows as a reward for their obedience. If the children misbehaved, parents reminded them of the possibility of receiving a 'switch'.
Features of the Ukrainian Celebration
Ethnographer Halyna Oliinyk shared the features of this celebration on the air of KYIV24.
'This means that the child always had to be obedient and polite throughout the entire year. Because this was not necessarily noted only before the Christmas holidays,' said Oliinyk.
She also emphasized that gifts for Saint Nicholas Day in the past were quite modest — mainly, they were apples and nuts, which had special value in winter.
Differences Between the Images of Saint Nicholas and Grandfather Frost
Oliinyk pointed out that the Ukrainian image of Saint Nicholas significantly differs from Grandfather Frost and Santa Claus. Nicholas was a real figure — a saint whom children could address with letters. In families, there was a tradition of leaving letters on the window a few days before the holiday so that angels could 'deliver' them to the saint. Unlike Santa, who supposedly travels the world in one night, Nicholas, according to folk beliefs, was aided by angels.
The Deep Wisdom of Traditions
The ethnographer noted that Ukrainian traditions contain deep pedagogical wisdom. In her words, if you carefully study the customs related to children and youth, it becomes clear that they were thoughtful and important for the upbringing of many generations.
In conclusion, singer Maria Burmaka presented the premiere of the song 'Our Joyful Nicholas', which is an author’s version of the old American song Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.
Saint Nicholas Day is not just a holiday of joy and gifts, but also an important part of Ukrainian cultural heritage. This tradition aims to raise children in the spirit of kindness, respect, and obedience, passing down the wisdom of generations through ancient customs. The holiday leaves warm memories, delights children, and reminds adults of the importance of good deeds in everyday life.
