When is Tank Troops Day celebrated in Ukraine?
Tank Troops Day in Ukraine is celebrated annually on September 14, according to the decree of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Honoring the courage and heroism of tank soldiers shown in the struggle for freedom, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as with the aim of establishing new military traditions, - it is stated in the decree.
History of the establishment of Tank Troops Day
Since the times of the Soviet Union, Tanker’s Day was celebrated in Ukraine annually on the second Sunday of September, starting from 1980. This tradition was preserved in many post-Soviet countries after the collapse of the USSR.
In the context of the full-scale Russian invasion and decommunization policy, the celebration of this day has changed. To honor the courage of Ukrainian tank soldiers, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on September 9, 2023, establishing a new Tank Troops Day, which is now celebrated on September 14 every year.
This day is a gratitude not only to the active tankers but also to the veterans who laid the foundations of this branch of the military, to tank builders who manufacture and improve combat vehicles, and to cadets — the future tankers.
What tanks are in service in Ukraine
The Ukrainian army is one of the largest in the post-Soviet space, equipped with a large number of tanks. For example:
- T-72;
- T-80;
- T-64;
- BM 'Bulat';
- T-84 'Oplot' (domestic production);
- German Leopard-1 and Leopard-2;
- British Challenger 2;
- American M1 Abrams;
- French AMX-10 RC.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine quickly adapted to Western technology, transitioning from old Soviet models to modern ones. The availability of various types of equipment is a unique feature of Ukraine's tank troops.
Thus, Tank Troops Day in Ukraine has become an important holiday for military personnel, veterans, tank builders, and future tankers. This holiday emphasizes their courage and heroism in defending the country, honoring the traditions and contributions of everyone serving in this important field.Read also
