A unique operation was performed in Lviv: a kidney and liver were transplanted from parents to a child.
According to ТСН: In Lviv, doctors from the First Medical Association performed a unique operation for Ukraine: a double transplant for a seven-year-old boy from Ivano-Frankivsk. The child received a kidney from his father and a part of his mother's liver. This operation became the only chance for Arthur in his battle against a rare disease.
Arthur's Story
Arthur was born healthy, but at the age of two, he was diagnosed with an aggressive malignant tumor — a pelvic sarcoma. After complex treatment, the cancer retreated, but new health issues emerged, leading to total kidney failure.
Genetic testing revealed that the boy had primary hyperoxaluria — a rare mutation. This problem caused the liver not to produce the necessary enzyme, and the unprocessed oxalate led to the formation of kidney stones. Before the transplant, the boy weighed only 16 kilograms and constantly required hemodialysis.
Complex Operation
The head of the Transplantation Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv, Maxim Ovechko, noted that this was a 'real challenge,' as the kidney transplant alone could not solve the problem, since the root cause of the disease was in the liver. No one in Ukraine had previously conducted such a combined family transplant for a child.
To give Arthur a chance for a full life, his parents became donors of both organs. The operation was conducted in three stages: first, the non-functioning kidneys were removed, then the kidney from the father was transplanted, and finally, a part of the liver from the mother was transplanted.
Victory Over Disease
Successfully integrating both organs, today Arthur is finally starting to gain weight, laughing, and, according to doctors, 'dreaming of fulfilling simple childhood wishes, such as drinking sweet soda for the first time in his life.'
This story has become a true example of the success of Ukrainian medicine, where an unconventional approach and the efforts of medical workers have opened new possibilities for the little patient. The double transplant has become not just a medical victory, but also a hope for many children in need of complex treatment procedures.
