Illegal Collection of State Aid

According to TSN.ua: A former army sapper unlawfully obtained over 805,000 Ukrainian hryvnias in government assistance by forging medical documents to claim a combat injury. Although he was discharged in October 2023 due to health reasons, the man never participated in active combat and had no frontline wounds. To secure the payout, he submitted a fake certificate to a military medical board, which led Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense to issue him a one-time cash benefit of more than 805,000 hryvnias in June 2024.

Law Enforcement Response

Authorities have now charged the ex-sapper with large-scale fraud under Part 4 of Article 190 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code. In a related development, two officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) were also arrested on suspicion of extortion and bribery. This case has raised public concerns about potential abuse within the system of social support for veterans.

The incident highlights the urgent need for tighter oversight of veteran welfare programs, as such scams risk eroding public trust in state support for those who genuinely need it. The swift reaction from law enforcement and society is critical to preventing similar abuses in the future.
