The real dangers to the Ukrainian power grid

According to TSN.ua: Energy expert Hennadij Rjabzew points out that for the Ukrainian energy system, it is not only low temperatures, but specific weather phenomena that pose the greatest threat. Meteorologists predict temperatures below minus 20 degrees, but the main risks come from atmospheric events such as:

  • Wet snow that sticks to power lines,
  • Snowstorms,
  • Strong gusts of wind,
  • Ice formation on overhead lines,
  • Freezing rain.

The consequences of such storms are already noticeable in Ukraine: Hundreds of villages were left without power after heavy snowfall and other weather extremes. This shows that it is not frost, but specific weather conditions that can greatly deteriorate the supply situation. Restrictions in power supply could continue for at least another year if weather conditions remain unfavorable.

Hennadij Rjabzew explains: 'Wet snow, snowstorms, icing, or freezing rain – they are much more harmful to the system than low temperatures.'

Why weather observation is crucial now

The electricity supply situation in Ukraine remains tense, especially in winter when the weather can change unpredictably. The mentioned weather phenomena that can cause serious problems for the energy grid require careful observation and preparation by the responsible authorities. In light of climate change, ensuring the reliability of energy grids is all the more important to avoid supply disruptions that would affect the lives of the population and the economy of the country.
