Ukrainian Nuclear Facilities Under Threat of Attack

According to TSN.ua: The head of the Center for Radiotechnologies, Serhiy Beskrestnov, has issued a stark warning about the potentially catastrophic consequences of Russian attacks on Ukraine's nuclear power plants (NPPs). He stated that even a miss by enemy weaponry could trigger a 'second Chernobyl.' According to the expert, any error by so-called 'high-precision' enemy armaments within a 300-meter radius of a reactor could have fatal results.

Serhiy Beskrestnov, who uses the call sign 'Flash,' emphasized that Russia's 'Kinzhal' missiles have low accuracy, which significantly increases the risk of a major accident. He cited an incident from November 2025, where one such missile struck a residential building instead of its intended factory target in Ternopil, as evidence of the weapon's unreliability. By mid-January, occupying forces had reportedly conducted reconnaissance on ten critical facilities across nine Ukrainian regions, raising further alarm.

The Critical Need to Protect Nuclear Sites

Beskrestnov also commented on statements from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, noting that Russia is planning strikes on electricity transmission substations. The expert stresses the paramount importance of protecting nuclear installations, as their vulnerability could lead to severe environmental and humanitarian disasters. The safety of these sites is a global concern, given the potential for radioactive contamination to cross international borders.

Serhiy Beskrestnov's appeal highlights the critical security situation facing Ukraine's nuclear power plants amid ongoing hostilities. Given the potential consequences of an attack on a nuclear facility, it is essential to ensure robust protection and emergency response measures. The heightened risks associated with the use of inaccurate weaponry threaten not only the energy infrastructure but also the lives of people living near these sensitive sites.
