Russia's FSB Accuses UK of Plotting Attack on General Alexeyev: Key Details

Kremlin Allegations and the Attack on a General

According to TSN.ua: Russian authorities have formally accused the United Kingdom of involvement in an assassination attempt against Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, which occurred in Moscow on February 6. Alexander Bortnikov, Director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), pointed to a potential British connection in the case but did not present any specific evidence to support the claim.

General Alexeyev has been linked by Western intelligence to the 2018 poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, UK. In connection with the recent attack on Alexeyev, Russian officials have announced the arrest of two suspects:

  • 65-year-old Lyubomir Korbut
  • 66-year-old Viktor Vasin

A third suspect, 54-year-old Zinaida Serebryakova, is alleged to have fled to Ukraine.

Alexander Bortnikov: 'Behind them [Ukrainian special services] stand third countries. We see here, first and foremost, a British trace. Therefore, the investigation continues.'

This statement underscores the Russian position that external powers are interfering in the matter. It is notable that the European Union has previously sanctioned the Russian general for his alleged role in the operation connected to the Skripal poisoning.

Heightening International Tensions

These developments are escalating tensions in international relations, particularly between Russia and the United Kingdom, and highlight the long-lasting repercussions of incidents from several years ago. This accusation comes amidst a period of severely strained relations between Moscow and London, dating back to the Cold War and exacerbated by recent conflicts.

The situation illustrates the complexity and volatility of current international affairs. The Kremlin's allegations risk further inflaming tensions between the two states, especially within the context of existing sanctions and security-related conflicts. The outcome of ongoing investigations could significantly impact the geopolitical landscape in the region and shape the response of the international community.
