Shelling Leaves Kherson Without Gas: Government Distributes Heaters as Alternative.
Critical Gas Supply Crisis in Kherson
According to TSN.ua: Kherson is facing a severe disruption to its gas supply due to sustained enemy shelling. In response to the destruction of energy facilities, the Ukrainian government, as announced by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, is providing the population with electric and gas heaters. Frontline regions, particularly Kherson Oblast, are receiving special attention. This is part of a broader effort to address the humanitarian impact of Russia's ongoing war on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure.
The supply situation has been severely complicated by attacks on gas extraction facilities, including a major strike on January 17. Over the past week alone, six attacks have targeted infrastructure belonging to the state energy company 'Naftogaz'. To mitigate the immediate crisis, 'Naftogaz' has already supplied 1,750 electric and gas heaters to residents in Kherson.
Government and 'Naftogaz' Mobilize Response Teams
To address the damage from shelling nationwide, 474 emergency crews from gas distribution networks are operating on an intensified schedule. More than two thousand gas service workers are engaged in repair operations to restore supply in affected areas. Prime Minister Svyrydenko emphasized that priority is currently being given to frontline regions, including:
- Chernihiv
- Kharkiv
- Sumy
- Donetsk
- Zaporizhzhia
- Mykolaiv
- Kherson
- Dnipropetrovsk
The gas crisis in Kherson exemplifies the wider challenges confronting Ukraine's frontline territories during the protracted conflict. The relentless targeting of critical infrastructure, especially energy assets, creates immense difficulties in providing civilians with essential resources like gas and electricity. The government and 'Naftogaz' are attempting to alleviate the resulting humanitarian strain through the distribution of heaters and aggressive repair campaigns.
