Iran Strikes US Air Base in Saudi Arabia: 10 Wounded, Surveillance Aircraft Destroyed.
Attack at Prince Sultan Air Base
According to TSN.ua: In late February 2026, a major incident occurred at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, a facility used by American forces. Iran launched a strike that left ten US service members injured, two of them seriously. The attack also destroyed an E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft, a critical asset that significantly complicates the situation for the US military.
Loss of the E-3 Sentry AWACS
The E-3 Sentry AWACS, deployed to Saudi Arabia in late February 2026, plays a vital role in managing air operations. With production of these aircraft now halted, the US Air Force has only 15 E-3G units remaining. The strike also damaged at least two US Air Force tanker aircraft, adding further challenges to an already difficult scenario.
Experts have highlighted the severity of this loss. Heather Penney remarked:
“The loss of this E-3 is extremely problematic.”Mykhailo Zhirokhov added:
“This is a serious loss, as the US Air Force had only 16 (now 15) E-3G aircraft.”AWACS planes have a long history of use in various military operations, including Operation Desert Storm, the Kosovo War, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the campaign against the Islamic State.
This incident underscores the growing tensions in the region and its potential impact on future US military operations. The destruction of the E-3 Sentry AWACS not only reduces America's ability to command air operations but also increases risks for US military units in the area. Losing such a strategic asset may push the United States to reassess its military strategies and bolster defensive positions, as the Middle East remains a volatile theater.
