Iranian human rights activist commits suicide in protest against the regime in the country.
Iranian human rights activist Kianush Sanjari committed suicide as a protest against the dictatorship of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He demanded the release of four political prisoners, otherwise he stated he would commit suicide. Sanjari's death was confirmed by his fellow activists.
Before his death, Sanjari stated that no one should be imprisoned for freedom of speech and that everyone has the right to protest in Iran.
The four political prisoners for whom Sanjari protested were arrested after the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. Sanjari himself had also been imprisoned for political activism.
Sanjari was a well-known critic of the Iranian leaders and believed in democracy. He left the country in 2007 but returned in 2016, where he was arrested and sentenced to imprisonment. He claimed he was beaten and subjected to abuse in prison.
Hosseyn Ronaghi, a freedom of speech activist, called Sanjari a symbol of the struggle for freedom.
