Italy Braces for 'Blackbird Days' Storm: 100 km/h Winds and 7-Meter Waves Forecast.
Italy Prepares for a Major Storm
According to TSN.ua: Italy is bracing for a severe storm system, expected to bring powerful winds and intense precipitation. This period, traditionally known as the 'Days of the Blackbird' (Giorni della Merla), is considered the coldest of the year but is currently marked by significant temperature anomalies. For instance, temperatures in Milan and Rome have risen to +2°C.
Forecasts predict wind gusts reaching 90 km/h on the mainland parts of Sardinia and Sicily, with speeds exceeding 100 km/h over open waters. Waves are expected to swell to heights of 7 meters. The Italian government has already declared a state of emergency due to the cyclone's impact, which caused substantial damage in Sicily. Preliminary estimates place the damage from Cyclone 'Harry' between 740 million and over 1.5 billion euros.
Aid for Those Affected
Approximately 1,500 residents were evacuated in Niscemi following a landslide. To assist the victims, the Italian government has allocated 100 million euros for immediate relief. Weather models indicate that Friday, January 30, will offer a brief relative respite before the storm intensifies, with Saturday, January 31, expected to be the peak of the severe weather. Conditions are forecast to improve by Sunday, February 1.
This event highlights Italy's vulnerability to extreme weather, particularly during the winter when conditions can deteriorate rapidly. The Italian government is actively coordinating aid for the affected regions while also working on measures to mitigate future disasters. The situation remains under control but requires vigilant monitoring and swift action to ensure public safety. Italy's varied geography makes it susceptible to both Mediterranean storms and Alpine weather systems.
