Canada Targets 100 More Vessels From Russia's Shadow Fleet in Expanded Sanctions.
Canada Broadens Anti-Russia Sanctions
According to TSN.ua: In 2026, Canada announced it had added 100 ships from Russia's so-called shadow fleet to its sanctions list, intensifying economic pressure on Moscow over its ongoing aggression. This move is part of a broader Western effort to curb Russia's ability to evade existing restrictions through covert shipping networks.
Prior to this, Ottawa had already imposed sanctions on 21 individuals and 53 entities. To date, Canada's sanctions apply to over 3,400 individuals and organizations, underscoring the country's firm stance against Russian hostility. Additionally, Canada lowered the price cap on Russian crude oil from $47.6 to $44.1 per barrel, a measure aimed at further limiting the revenue Moscow can use to fund its military operations.
Canadian Defense Minister's Remarks
“Canada is adding another 100 vessels from Russia's shadow fleet to the sanctions list,”
Anita Anand, Canadian Minister of Defense
She also stressed that “Canada remains unwavering in its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and its people.” Anand added, “Until Russia halts its aggression, Canada will continue to tighten the sanctions pressure.”
This expansion of sanctions reflects Canada's consistent position in support of Ukraine and its goal to limit Russia's capacity to pursue aggressive policies. The increase in sanctioned entities, along with the reduction of the oil price cap, demonstrates Canada's effort to diminish the economic resources Russia can leverage to fund its actions. This decision may also have global economic implications, as adjustments in oil pricing policy could trigger volatility in international markets.
