Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz did not want Ukraine to win the war with Russia, but helped it not to lose. This was stated by the head of the German party "Christian Democratic Union" Friedrich Merz in an interview with Bild.

Merz noted that Scholz spoke about helping Ukraine avoid defeat during the Russian invasion. He also agrees with this approach.

"Ukraine will never be able to defeat Russia, that was never the goal. But for me, victory means: it must restore sovereignty over its territory. And Russia must stop attacking this country," Merz said.

According to him, everything possible must be done to make the war hopeless for Russia. However, we are currently far from achieving this goal.

If we look at the situation now, after two and a half years, it looks horrible and sobering. I recently talked about this in the Bundestag. We acted too late and did too little," he added.

We remind that Friedrich Merz will become a candidate for the post of chancellor during the parliamentary elections in 2025. His candidacy was confirmed by the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union.

It should also be noted that before the start of the war in Ukraine, Merz was considered a potential successor to Angela Merkel as leader of the Christian Democratic Union.
