Sewage System Breaches Plague Kyiv Amidst Freezing Temperatures and Infrastructure Strain.
Kyiv's Sewage System Crisis
According to TSN.ua: Kyiv is experiencing ruptures in its sewage system, a direct consequence of severe freezing weather and immense strain on the city's energy infrastructure. In an interview with 'RBC-Ukraine', Maksym Bakhmatov, head of the Desnianskyi District State Administration, reported that pipes are already bursting, with incidents occurring in the Holosiivskyi district. Bakhmatov described the situation as critical and urged residents to remain in the city and to prepare outdoor waste pits. This crisis underscores the vulnerability of urban utilities during wartime when subjected to extreme winter conditions.
According to Bakhmatov, the problem is now fully apparent:
'It has already happened. In Holosiivo, pipes are already bursting, and excrement is already flowing directly from windows.' - Maksym Bakhmatov
He emphasized the necessity of holding the line during the crisis despite all difficulties, calling on citizens: 'We must stay, dig pits, and hold the defense, no matter what.'
Official Response and Challenges for Residents
In contrast, Kyiv's chief sanitary doctor, Serhii Chumak, considers the digging of waste pits to be a premature solution. Currently, the city has operational heating tents and aid stations in schools, indicating authorities' attempts to support residents during the emergency. Bakhmatov also noted that 'it is unpleasant to dig pits, it is humiliating, it is a catastrophe, in the capital it is impossible. But it has already happened.'
He added that for survival, various methods must be employed:
- setting up bio-toilets
- digging pits
- using bags
- employing cat litter
The situation in Kyiv remains difficult, with residents facing new challenges linked to the frost and the state of infrastructure.
This development highlights serious systemic issues facing the capital's infrastructure during extreme weather. The deterioration of the sewage system in freezing conditions poses additional public health risks, particularly concerning epidemiological safety. The official response, focused on supporting residents through heating points and meeting basic needs, demonstrates the severity of the challenges confronting the city. Simultaneously, the conflicting opinions on the advisability of digging waste pits reveal the difficult balance required in a crisis between emergency measures and long-term solutions.
