Major Overhaul of the Tunnel Connecting Taras Shevchenko and Pochaina Stations

According to TSN.ua: Kyiv is bracing for a large-scale renovation of the metro tunnel between the Taras Shevchenko and Pochaina stations, a project expected to cause significant disruptions on the Blue Line for nearly two years. The work, which involves soil reinforcement and upgrades to monitoring systems, carries a price tag of 1.84 billion Ukrainian hryvnias. Construction is slated to begin this year and will last up to 23 months.

These tunnels, built more than 40 years ago, now require urgent updates to ensure safe operation. Authorities are currently gathering documentation to announce a tender for the project. Dmytro Bespalov emphasized that after decades of use, such a comprehensive repair is essential—without it, the metro cannot continue functioning. He also noted that the urgency shown by officials suggests the tunnel structures near Pochaina are in critical need of attention.

“Most likely, workers will carry out repairs at night,” said Dmytro Bespalov.

Traffic Management Scenarios During Construction

Several strategies are being considered to manage metro traffic during the renovation. Possible approaches include:

  • carrying out repairs without halting train service;
  • adjusting schedules to work during nighttime hours;
  • suspending service on weekends.

The aging of metro tunnels and the need for repairs raises questions about aligning with European standards. However, financial risks and the threat of prolonged construction timelines could complicate the project's execution.

This capital repair of the tunnel between Taras Shevchenko and Pochaina stations is a critical step toward ensuring the safety and reliability of the Kyiv Metro. European experience shows that regular infrastructure upgrades can significantly improve passenger service quality. Still, the duration of the work and potential delays may impact the city's transportation network, requiring commuters to adjust their travel habits throughout this period.
