Power Failure Halts Kyiv Metro: What Caused the Supply Crisis

Major Public Transport Disruption Hits Kyiv

According to TSN.ua: A major public transport failure occurred in Kyiv on January 31, 2023. Train service on all three lines of the capital's metro system was completely halted due to power supply issues. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed reports of emergency power outages across the city. This incident highlights the ongoing strain on Ukraine's energy grid during wartime.

The metro stoppage was caused by emergency electricity blackouts that began across Ukraine on the morning of January 31. A critical voltage drop was recorded on the 400 kV high-voltage line 'Isakcha - Vulcanesti - MGRES'. Igor Fesik reported that the issue of insufficient energy voltage is currently being addressed.

Impact on Other Cities

Beyond Kyiv, train services in the Kharkiv metro system were also stopped. Vitali Klitschko noted that metro traffic was suspended due to low voltage in the network, but the underground stations can currently function as shelters. The situation in Kharkiv's metro also caused concern among residents.

In the capital, problems with water and heat supply emerged in various districts. The halt of metro services in Kyiv and Kharkiv resulted from widespread emergency power cuts, demonstrating the vulnerability of energy infrastructure under critical load. This underscores the importance of ensuring stable power supply for public transport, especially during war and an energy crisis.

Local authorities and energy companies must take measures to improve the situation and prevent similar incidents in the future.
