Ukraine's Demographic Crisis

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's demographic crisis has intensified due to the ongoing war, resulting in a sharp decline in the birth rate alongside rising mortality. The number of children enrolled in Kyiv's municipal kindergartens has dropped by one-third. Over the four years of war, a total of 77,557 children were born in the city. Data shows that the population of children aged 0 to 6 in Kyiv has fallen by 36.6% since January 2022. As of February 25, 2026, 94% of the city's preschool education institutions are operating in a standard format, with a current total of 553 municipal preschools.

According to the Department of Health, from February 24, 2022, to February 24, 2026, 77,557 children were born in municipal healthcare facilities. The annual birth rate in Kyiv shows the following trend:

  • 2021 - 30,336 babies
  • 2022 - 17,501 babies
  • 2023 - 19,966 babies
  • 2024 - 20,912 babies
  • 2025 - 20,258 babies

Halyna Poltorak noted that the number of children in Kyiv's municipal kindergartens has decreased by a third compared to the pre-war period. Olena Shemeliak added that the number of children on waiting lists for their parents' chosen preschool has also dropped significantly. These trends highlight the severe strain on the early education system caused by the protracted war and demographic decline. This situation is a direct consequence of mass displacement and the immense pressures of wartime life on families.

Implications for the Nation's Future

The trends in Kyiv's birth rate and child population reflect a broader national pattern with potential long-term consequences for Ukraine's future. A shrinking cohort of children in educational institutions could significantly impact the economy, social structure, and the overall demographic health of the nation. In the context of war and uncertainty, finding effective solutions to support families and improve conditions for childbirth is critically important for national resilience.
