A Mother of Five Children Who Was a CIA Spy for 27 Years: How She Hid the Secret.
According to ТСН: An astonishing story unfolds around a mother who concealed the truth from her family for 27 years and later decided to reveal this secret.
Anne Butler, who lived with her husband for 37 years, led a double life. While her husband always knew about her job, their five children were convinced that their mom was a diplomat at the U.S. State Department, which allowed them to travel the world. In reality, she was a CIA spy.
Anne started her career at the CIA in 1986, and with her husband's support, she managed not to tell the kids anything. She noted:
“He never asked where I was, whom I talked to, or what we discussed. I could disappear for a few days, and he wouldn’t know where I was.”
Family members had no idea about her true activities. Daughter Alexis admitted that 'no way in the world' could she imagine that her mom led such a double life, as to her, she was just mom.
Dangerous Missions and Secrets
While at the CIA, Anne received assignments related to finding and recruiting agents to foreign governments and terrorist groups. It was dangerous work, and the woman risked being outed every day. Sometimes she had to travel under a fake name, even when she was nine months pregnant.
This double reality became known to a broader audience when Anne published a book titled Wife, Mother, Spy, the content of which was approved by the CIA.
Balancing Family and Career
Anne always sought a career that would allow her to work abroad, so she approached many organizations. However, the CIA became her choice. She recalled that balancing family life and secret work was not easy:
“Sometimes it was hard. I had to stay focused and carry out my tasks. I had very little time for myself.”
Anne's eldest daughter had to learn about her mother's profession from a school friend. Other children found out only during a party honoring her retirement.
This story opens a window into the complexities of a life that combines a dangerous career and the role of a mother. It highlights how challenging it can be to balance personal life and professional responsibilities, especially when the family knows nothing about the real risks associated with working for national security.
