Moldova Moves Toward 60-Day State of Emergency After Major Russian Strike on Ukraine's Power Grid.
How Ukraine's Power Grid Attack Impacts Moldova
According to TSN.ua: A massive Russian assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on March 24 triggered severe disruptions in Moldova's own power network. In response, Moldova's government is now weighing the imposition of a two-month emergency in the energy sector. The attack has sparked deep concern among both officials and the general population.
The Saturday strike knocked out the Vulcănești-Isaccea power line, a critical link for Moldova's electricity supply. The country imports roughly 300 megawatts from Ukraine's grid, making this disruption a serious threat to regional energy stability.
Moldovan Government Response
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu confirmed the gravity of the situation: 'At 1:00 PM today, I convened a government meeting, and we will propose declaring a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days.' This step underscores the urgent need to safeguard the nation's energy security.
President Maia Sandu also voiced alarm over the attacks on energy facilities, stating that
“attacks on energy infrastructure constitute a war crime by Russia”— Maia Sandu. She emphasized that
“the overnight strikes severed a key energy link between Moldova and Europe”— Maia Sandu, further compounding the country's challenges.
The government is now preparing to implement measures aimed at stabilizing the energy system, fully aware of how events in Ukraine are reshaping regional energy security.
This crisis highlights Moldova's vulnerability as a nation heavily reliant on electricity imports from Ukraine. The proposed state of emergency could be a critical step in averting further disruptions and ensuring supply stability. With the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, regional energy security remains fragile, demanding swift and coordinated action from Moldova and its neighbors.
