Massive Strike on Kharkiv Infrastructure Cuts Heat for Over 100,000

According to TSN.ua: A large-scale attack on Kharkiv's energy infrastructure on February 3rd left thousands without heating. The situation was severely worsened by air temperatures that plunged below -20 degrees Celsius (-4°F). Approximately 105,000 people were affected, causing widespread concern among the city's population. This attack is part of a wider pattern of strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure during the winter months.

Damage to Critical Energy Facilities

The assault damaged key energy facilities, including the 'Kharkiv TEC-5' thermal power plant and the 'Kharkivska' and 'Zaliutyne' electrical substations. As a result, heating was cut to more than 800 apartment buildings, creating extreme hardship for residents. A state of emergency was declared in the city in response to the crisis.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated that the situation requires urgent action. He emphasized that

"each person makes their own decisions and bears responsibility for them,"
cautioning citizens about the need for careful judgment during the emergency.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, particularly during periods of extreme cold. The lack of heat in countless homes creates not only physical hardship but also a significant psychological burden. Authorities are responding, but restoring full power will take time, requiring citizens to remain calm and exercise caution to ensure their own safety.
