Emergency Services Issue Warning Over Kyiv Reservoir Gatherings

According to TSN.ua: Despite the serious risks, mass public events are being organized on the frozen surface of the Kyiv Reservoir, a large artificial lake north of the capital. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) in the Kyiv region has issued a stark warning about the dangers of attending such gatherings. The ice is unreliable, especially following several days of thaw, creating a severe risk of people falling through.

Rescuers emphasize the life-threatening hazard posed by the unstable ice. Furthermore, the open location offers virtually no shelter in the event of an air attack, significantly increasing the risks for anyone on the ice. The Kyiv Reservoir has become a popular spot for winter recreation, but current conditions make it exceptionally dangerous.

“This is an area where reconnaissance drone and 'Shahed' activity is recorded at specific hours,” noted Olha Kukharuk.

The Emergency Service stressed: “For safety reasons, we urge residents and visitors of the Vyshhorod district to refrain from visiting any such events.” The situation has sparked widespread discussion among locals, many of whom are heeding the rescuers' warnings. Adhering to basic ice safety rules is crucial to avoiding tragedy in this context.

The Critical Need for Safety Precautions

The situation at the Kyiv Reservoir underscores the vital importance of following safety measures during winter activities on frozen bodies of water. With threats from both unstable ice and potential aerial attacks becoming particularly acute, rescuers are calling on the public to be responsible in their choice of leisure locations. As weekend visitor numbers are expected to rise, monitoring the situation and adhering to SES recommendations remains critically important for public safety. This warning comes amid Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, where civilian areas remain targets.
