Mother Who Starved Her 5-Year-Old Disabled Son to Death Gets 12-Year Prison Sentence.
Tragedy in Ukraine's Ternopil Region
According to TSN.ua: A woman in the Ternopil region has been convicted of maliciously failing to care for her 5-year-old disabled son, leading directly to his death. The Borshchiv District Court sentenced her to 12 years in prison. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the mother deliberately starved the boy, who suffered from congenital pathologies and a severe illness, while denying him proper medical attention or basic care.
How the Child Died
The boy died from mechanical asphyxiation, with forensic experts confirming that he had gone without food for several days before his death. In the three days leading up to the tragedy, he was left alone in the apartment. Although the woman received social assistance in 2022, she never sought medical help for the child. The boy's father has been serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2021.
“This crime is shocking in its cruelty—a helpless child felt pain where he should have felt a mother’s love and care.” — Mykola Martsun, prosecutor in the case
Prosecutors had requested a 14-year prison term, but the court imposed a lighter sentence. An appeal is now being prepared by the prosecution.
This case highlights deep flaws in Ukraine’s social protection system and the enforcement of rights for children with disabilities. A lack of proper oversight and support for families receiving state aid can lead to catastrophic outcomes, as seen here. It underscores the urgent need for government agencies to monitor vulnerable households more closely to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
