Defense Minister Theo Francken wrote on X that 'several drones' were noticed over the military facility. He also recalled that similar drones had already been observed over a military training camp last month.
A drone detection system is already in operation at the base. 'The Ministry of Defense will meet with local police next week to assess the threat and intensify efforts to identify and detain the drone pilots,' Francken noted.
The Situation in Lithuania
It is known that Lithuania wants to involve additional air defense forces to protect its airspace after a drone flew into the country from Belarus. On the evening of Friday, October 24, Lithuania temporarily closed the two largest airports in the country - in Vilnius and Kaunas - as well as checkpoints on the border with Belarus. The decision was made after balloons entered Lithuanian airspace from the Belarusian side. In response, the airports suspended operations, and border services blocked movement through the main crossings.
Lithuania is increasingly facing the intrusion of smuggled balloons from Belarus into its airspace. Given the potential threat, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda expressed the possibility of a prolonged closure of the border with Belarus and restrictions on transit to Kaliningrad.
These events indicate the growing threat of drones in European airspace, particularly in Belgium and Lithuania. Government agencies are taking measures to enhance security and respond to potential risks to national security. In the context of escalating tensions in the region, it is important to monitor developments and take necessary measures to ensure the protection of airspace.
