Sharp Decline in Church Membership Across Germany

According to TSN.ua: Germany has seen a dramatic drop in the number of people belonging to both the Catholic and Evangelical churches, with membership falling by more than one million in just twelve months. The total number of parishioners now stands at 36.6 million, a decrease of 1.2 million compared to the previous year. This marks the continuation of a multi-year downward trend.

The Evangelical church now counts roughly 17.4 million members, while the Catholic church has around 19.2 million. Evangelical membership shrank by 3.2% over the year. Approximately 350,000 people formally left the Evangelical church, and about 330,000 members died. In contrast, the number of baptisms and new joiners in the Evangelical church was only around 121,000.

Challenges Facing the Catholic Church

The Catholic church faces a similarly difficult situation: roughly 307,000 individuals left the denomination, and over 200,000 members passed away. These figures underscore the ongoing decline in religious affiliation across Germany, a trend that is causing growing concern within church leadership.

This decline in church membership reflects broader social shifts in the country, including secularization and changing attitudes toward religion among younger generations. The trend presents significant challenges for churches as they reconsider their role in society and seek ways to attract new followers while retaining existing ones.
