Four Years Under Russian Occupation: Oleshky's Deepening Crisis of Food and Water

A Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolds in Oleshky

According to TSN.ua: The city of Oleshky in Ukraine's Kherson region has endured four years of Russian occupation, resulting in a severe and ongoing humanitarian disaster. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Oleshky has remained under occupation, with the local population now facing a critical blockade. Residents are suffering from acute shortages of food, water, and medicine, creating catastrophic living conditions. This southern Ukrainian city, situated on the Dnipro River's left bank, has been cut off from systematic aid.

Prior to the invasion, Oleshky was home to nearly 40,000 people, but the population has now dwindled to no more than 6,000. The situation deteriorated sharply from mid-January 2026, with aid deliveries becoming almost non-existent. According to Tetiana Hasanenko,

"For this entire period, from mid-January to today, I know of only one delivery of food to Oleshky,"
highlighting the dire circumstances for those who remain. As of February 26, there is no systematic food supply, and only twice in the last month and a half have private cars managed to reach the city.

People in Oleshky are attempting to secure food for themselves, but many are already experiencing hunger. Desperate locals risk their lives trying to bring bread into the city, often with tragic consequences. The community is effectively trapped, with the occupation authorities restricting movement and aid.

Collapse of Medical Services and Aid

Only one ambulance service operates in the city, and it brings supplies solely for the hospital. Oleshky suffers from a severe scarcity of purchasable goods, alongside a lack of clean drinking water, electricity, gas, and heating. Residents are forced to rely on a single pharmacy, which stocks only a minimal range of medicines. The collapse of basic infrastructure has turned daily survival into a immense struggle.

Tetiana Hasanenko further emphasized the grim irony, stating,

"Russia exploits the theme of the 'Siege of Leningrad' and speaks of the suffering of people then. But what are modern Russians doing to our community? This is a road of death for civilians under drones."
This situation is causing significant alarm both within Ukraine and internationally. The humanitarian catastrophe in Oleshky undoubtedly requires an urgent response and support from the global community.

The crisis in Oleshky stands as a stark example of the human cost inflicted by protracted armed conflict and blockade. With local inhabitants left in a desperate situation, it is imperative for international organizations to address these challenges and provide the necessary assistance to mitigate the effects of this disaster.
