Ukrainian Bank's Cash-in-Transit Vehicles Seized

According to TSN.ua: Oschadbank of Ukraine is demanding the return of two armored cash-transport vehicles and their valuable cargo, which were detained in Hungary on March 5, 2026. The bank intends to pursue all legal avenues to protect its rights, as the assets left behind in Hungary represent a substantial sum. This incident highlights the complex legal and logistical challenges faced by Ukrainian financial institutions operating internationally.

Following the seizure of the two cash-in-transit vehicles on March 5, 2026, seven members of the security crew managed to return to Ukraine, but the vehicles and their contents remained in Hungarian territory. According to the bank, the detained vehicles were carrying assets with a total value of:

  • 40 million US dollars
  • 35 million euros
  • 9 kilograms of bank-grade gold

The bank holds a valid license for international transport operations, issued by Ukraine's State Service for Transport Safety, confirming the legality of its valuable goods transportation activities. Such transport operations are conducted regularly, approximately once a week.

The detention of the Ukrainians in Hungary is an act of pre-election blackmail.

Andriy Sybiga, Oschadbank Representative

Consequently, the bank expresses concern not only over the loss of assets but also over potential political motivations behind the detention. Oschadbank will continue to take measures to defend its interests in this matter.

Implications for International Relations

This situation underscores the critical importance of stable international relations and legal security for Ukrainian companies engaged in cross-border transport. The seizure of the armored vehicles could have serious repercussions not just for Oschadbank, but also for Ukraine's international standing. How this case unfolds may impact future relations between Ukraine and Hungary, particularly given the political context in both nations.
