How Foreign Work Experience Counts for Your Ukrainian Pension

According to TSN.ua: For the millions of Ukrainians who have worked abroad, a critical question is whether that time will count toward their state pension in Ukraine. Under current law, Ukraine does recognize official employment periods gained in most countries worldwide, allowing citizens to become eligible for a pension at age 60. It is important to note, however, that the Russian Federation and Belarus are key exceptions to this rule.

This foreign employment can be counted as a 'period of employment' to help meet the requirement to retire, but it does not increase the final pension amount. Furthermore, unofficial work or periods spent living solely on social assistance abroad do not count toward pensionable service either in Ukraine or in the foreign country. This underscores the vital importance of securing and keeping documents that prove official employment to qualify for a pension later.

The Significance of Recognizing Foreign Service

Given the scale of labor migration, the issue of crediting foreign work experience is a significant part of Ukraine's broader social security and pension reform discussions. Government policies on this matter directly impact the welfare of citizens who return to Ukraine after working abroad.

Increasing public awareness of these pension rights and requirements can also encourage Ukrainians working overseas to formalize their employment relationships, ensuring their future social protection.
