According to TSN.ua: Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University have achieved a first-of-its-kind harvest: chickpeas grown in a substance designed to mimic lunar soil. This breakthrough represents a significant step toward developing sustainable food sources for astronauts on future long-term Moon missions. The ability to grow food off-world is a critical challenge for deep space exploration.

How the Experiment Was Conducted

The team used a lunar soil simulant produced by Exolith Labs. They planted the chickpeas in a blend containing up to 75% of this simulated regolith, mixed with vermicompost, which proved to be the most effective ratio for growth. Prior to planting, the seeds were coated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, a treatment that may have enhanced the plants' ability to thrive in the harsh medium.

The researchers plan to continue their work by analyzing the nutritional value of the legumes and checking for any potential accumulation of toxic metals within the plants. As lead researcher Sara Santos noted,

"This experiment helps us understand whether it's possible to cultivate crops directly on the lunar surface."
The findings could have major implications for future space missions and the development of technologies for growing food on other worlds.

This study underscores the necessity of adapting agriculture to the extreme environments astronauts will encounter during extended missions to the Moon or other celestial bodies.
