Statements on Mobilization in Russia

According to TSN.ua: Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian president, has stated that there are currently no plans for a new wave of mobilization in the country. This remark came in response to comments from Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who had raised the possibility of a general mobilization in Russia. Peskov emphasized that

“the issue of a new mobilization is not on the agenda in Russia.”

Additionally, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, also noted that

“there is no need for a new mobilization.”
These statements come against the backdrop of over 80,000 individuals having signed military service contracts since the beginning of 2023.

Mobilization Context

It is worth noting that on February 23 of this year, both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev used rhetoric related to mobilization, but the situation now appears different. The current stance of senior Kremlin officials indicates an absence of plans for large-scale mobilization efforts in the near future.

These statements may suggest that Russia is attempting to stabilize its military situation after suffering significant losses during the conflict in Ukraine. The reduced emphasis on mobilization could also reflect the Kremlin’s effort to reassure the domestic audience and avoid social tensions linked to new military conscriptions. At the same time, the signing of military service contracts may point to shifts in army recruitment strategy, which will require further analysis and monitoring of developments in the region.
