Ukrainian Underground Hospital Receives Prestigious UN International Award.
Recognition of Sustainable Initiatives
According to ТСН: The Partnership for Sustainability Award is a recognized achievement in the fields of corporate sustainability and ESG (environmental, social responsibility, and governance). Each year, the award is given to the best projects that demonstrate effective collaboration between business, government, and society to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, protect the environment, and address economic and social challenges.
This Year's Successful Projects
This year, there were 150 applications from 22 countries, among which 93 projects made it to the finals. They were evaluated by international experts, including representatives from Harvard University, the London School of Economics, and other influential organizations.
Underground Hospital at the Front
The first underground medical hospital in Ukraine, created by Metinvest in cooperation with the Medical Forces of the East, is located at a depth of 6 meters. It is equipped with modern communication systems, radio-electronic warfare, and alternative power sources. The hospital has a laboratory, surgical equipment, oxygen concentrators, and other necessary medical supplies. According to NATO standards, it meets the level of Role/Echelon 2 field hospitals.
"This hospital has already saved about four thousand lives of military personnel performing combat missions 8-10 kilometers from the front line. Recently, one of these units suffered a direct hit - three aerial bombs! Thanks to the hospital, people were saved. Thank God, the entire unit remained alive," said the commander of the Medical Forces of the East, Roman Kuziv.
The stabilization point provides resuscitation and treatment of patients until their discharge or transfer to another hospital. The hospital operates two operating rooms, allowing for a wide range of emergency surgical operations without the need to transport the wounded to distant medical institutions, accepting up to 100 patients per day.
Innovations in Medicine
"Underground hospitals are our know-how, created based on steel bunkers - 'hideouts'. When it comes to saving the lives of defenders, every minute is important. That is why the placement of stabilization points near the front line and their concealment from the enemy allows medical personnel to work safely and provide timely assistance. This Ukrainian engineering invention has already proven effective and has attracted the interest of one of the world's leading armies," noted Metinvest's operational director, Oleksandr Myronenko.
The UN Global Compact in Ukraine represents a community of responsible businesses that shape the ESG culture, uniting over 25,000 participants in 167 countries. The Ukrainian network comprises nearly 150 companies across various sectors of the economy, and the Metinvest group became part of the UN Global Compact in 2010.
Support for Ukraine
It is worth noting that this year, Metinvest Akhmetov has already built the second medical point of NATO Role 2 standard, investing over 21 million UAH. In total, Metinvest's assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion has amounted to 9.3 billion UAH, of which 4.9 billion UAH was provided to the army within the initiative Steel Front by Rinat Akhmetov.
Thus, the projects implemented by Metinvest demonstrate a significant contribution to supporting Ukraine's medical infrastructure, especially in wartime conditions. Underground hospitals have already shown their effectiveness by saving thousands of lives and bringing Ukraine's healthcare system closer to international standards. These initiatives underscore the importance of partnership between business, government, and society in challenging times.
