Police Uncover 'Fortune-Teller' Scam Rings That Defrauded Ukrainian Soldiers of 1.4 Million Hryvnias.
Scam Rings Posing as Fortune Tellers Exposed in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian police have dismantled three family-based criminal rings that posed as fortune tellers to defraud military personnel and their families, swindling them out of money and valuables. The total losses from these groups' activities amount to nearly 1.4 million hryvnias. This fraudulent scheme has been operational since at least 2024, inflicting significant financial harm on trusting individuals. Such scams often exploit the heightened stress and uncertainty faced by families during wartime.
How the Criminal Groups Operated
Kyiv police exposed the operations of the three families. The scheme's alleged mastermind is a 50-year-old resident of the Cherkasy region. Members of the group, ranging in age from 18 to 60, used various manipulative methods to convince soldiers and their relatives of a supposed need to hand over cash and possessions for 'spiritual' services.
As part of the investigation, police conducted 10 searches in the Cherkasy and Vinnytsia regions. During these raids, authorities seized:
- over 400,000 hryvnias in various currencies
- dozens of mobile phones
- computer equipment
- occult paraphernalia
Three members of the group have already been formally notified of suspicion of fraud, while the alleged organizer and an active accomplice have been detained.
The 'fortune-teller' scam caused serious harm, not only financially but also emotionally, as many service members and their relatives fell victim to psychological manipulation. Police are continuing the investigation to identify all possible participants and prevent similar crimes in the future.
This case highlights the ongoing problem of fraud in Ukraine, particularly during wartime, when military personnel and their families are under immense emotional and financial strain.
It is crucial for the public to be aware of such risks and not fall prey to manipulation, while law enforcement must continue its work to protect citizens from these types of crimes.
