Putin threatens new occupation: what is known about Kremlin's statements and Western response.
According to ТСН: Russian President Vladimir Putin has again expressed his intention to expand control over Ukrainian territories if negotiations to end the war involving the United States do not take place.
During the annual meeting of the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense, he stated that Russian troops continue active operations 'on all fronts' and that Moscow will use both diplomatic and military means to achieve its goals.
According to him, if 'substantive negotiations' do not begin, Russia will continue the war for the 'liberation of historical lands'.
Military expenditures and support for Ukraine
Additionally, the Russian Defense Minister noted that by 2025, Russia's military expenditures will account for 5.1% of GDP, and in 2026, Moscow intends to intensify offensive actions.
In light of these statements, European leaders have again reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and dismissed any territorial concessions in favor of Russia, emphasizing that aggression cannot be rewarded.
Accusations and escalation risks
Putin also accused European politicians of 'inflating hysteria' regarding the Russian threat and hinted that further escalation of the conflict could become a reality, particularly concerning NATO countries.
'In Europe, they warn that such rhetoric indicates a lack of genuine readiness in the Kremlin for constructive peace negotiations and increases the risks of escalation in 2026,' the journalists write.
It should be noted that President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Putin's aggressive rhetoric is not new, but Russia's ability to continue the war depends on Western pressure.
Commenting on the Russian leader's intentions regarding the occupation of Ukrainian territories, Zelensky stressed that Putin's desire to wage war does not correspond to his capabilities if the sanctions pressure continues.
The President also noted that the American side asserts Putin's readiness to end the war in both public and private settings, stating that Ukraine supports this diplomatic initiative, although negotiations are not easy.
Russia's position on Ukraine remains aggressive, and Putin's statements indicate an intention to continue military operations in the event of unproductive negotiations. On the other hand, Ukraine is receiving support from European leaders who emphasize the need to prevent new territorial concessions, perceiving Russia's aggression as a dangerous signal. After all, Western pressure may become a decisive factor in restraining further escalation of the conflict.
