Christmas 2024: What the Star Will Bring, When to Sing Carols, and What Not to Do.
According to ТСН: The Christmas celebration holds an important place in the church calendar, being part of the Twelve Holy Days. This holiday is not limited to just one day, but consists of several parts. It begins with five days of pre-festivity and continues with six days of post-festivity after the holiday. Everything concludes on January 1, when the church celebrates the Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord.
The Essence and Spiritual Meaning of Christmas
The name of the holiday is associated with the ancient concept of the birth of new life, as in the context of Christianity, this day symbolizes the arrival of Jesus Christ into the world. His name, translated from Hebrew, means 'salvation', reflecting the essence of the Savior's mission - atonement for the sins of humanity and the gift of hope for eternal life. The birth of Christ became such a significant event that the prophets pointed out the exact time of his coming - the year 5508 from the creation of the world, marking the beginning of the modern calendar, dividing history into 'before' and 'after' our era.
Origins and Historical Transformation
The holiday has deep historical roots associated with ancient cults. In ancient times, people celebrated the birth of gods such as Osiris, Dionysus, or Mithras, primarily during the winter solstice - a symbolic time of the restoration of light and the return of spring. With the development of Christianity, the church gradually replaced pagan rituals with new meanings, and in Ukraine, this process occurred organically, transforming old customs into prayers and glorifications of God.
The Christmas Legend: From Bethlehem to Magical Gifts
The story of the Savior's birth began with the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where they ran out of room due to a population census. The only shelter was a cave for livestock, where Mary gave birth to the baby who changed humanity. The first witnesses of this moment were the shepherds, to whom an angel brought the news, and a bright Bethlehem star lit up the sky, showing the way to the wise men who brought three gifts:
Gold - as recognition of his royal power.
Incense - as a sign of honoring God's will.
Myrrh - as a symbol of Christ's human nature and his sacrificial fate.
These events became the basis for the tradition of making the eight-pointed star used to adorn festive Christmas trees.
Ukrainian Christmas Traditions: Kutya, Didukh, and Pylypivka
The preparation for the holiday begins with the Christmas fast, which lasts from November 27 to December 24. This time serves not only for food restrictions but also to complete all household chores in order to greet Christmas in cleanliness.
The Sacred Meaning of the Main Dishes on Christmas
The Christmas dishes, particularly kutya and uzvar, have deep symbolism, as they serve as memorial dishes. The ingredients of kutya, such as grains, honey, and poppy seeds, symbolize life, purity, and God's blessings. Depending on traditions, kutya can be lean or generous.
Didukh - A Living Connection of Generations
Didukh, a sheaf of unharvested ears of grain, becomes a symbol of fertility and wealth. It is decorated with viburnum and herbs, and its entry into the house is accompanied by the words, 'Didukh - into the house, trouble - out of the house.'
The Art of Nativity Scenes and Carol Singing at Christmas
The nativity scene is an original phenomenon of folk culture that gained popularity in the 17th century. It was performed on two levels - heavenly and earthly, with a biblical plot about the birth of Christ and everyday scenes. Carol singing is an important part of the celebration, taking into account regional peculiarities.
