Russian Strike on Burshtyn Power Plant Leaves Ivano-Frankivsk with Just Four Hours of Electricity Daily.
Energy Infrastructure Under Attack
According to TSN.ua: On February 7, 2023, Russian military forces targeted energy infrastructure in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, causing severe disruption to the power supply. The assault damaged the Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant, critically impacting electricity provision for the local population. These attacks on civilian infrastructure are a hallmark of Russia's ongoing invasion, aiming to cripple essential services during winter.
Region Faces Severe Blackouts
Authorities have imposed strict emergency power outage schedules across the region. Reports indicate electricity will be available for only four to five hours per day. In a further blow to Ukraine's energy grid, Russian forces also struck a critical substation in the Lviv region, which may exacerbate the nationwide supply crisis.
Ivano-Frankivsk Mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv stated that all services are working to resolve the issue, but warned that blackouts could be prolonged.
"We have implemented strict outage schedules. There is light for approximately four to five hours," he emphasized.
This strike is part of a broader Russian strategy to destabilize Ukraine by targeting critical infrastructure. Amid the war, energy security has become a top priority for Ukrainian authorities striving to maintain stable power for civilians. The response from local officials and emergency services underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for measures to restore the electricity supply.
