Russian Strike on Kyiv Power Plant Leaves Hundreds of Thousands Without Heat in Deep Freeze.
Darnytsia Power Plant Targeted in Attack
According to TSN.ua: Russian forces struck the Darnytsia Combined Heat and Power Plant in Kyiv on the night of February 3, inflicting significant damage. This attack occurred during a severe cold snap, with temperatures plummeting to -25°C (-13°F). As a result, hundreds of thousands of Kyiv residents were left without heating, creating a critical humanitarian situation in the capital. Targeting civilian energy infrastructure during winter is a tactic Russia has employed throughout the conflict.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that the Darnytsia plant has no military purpose and is dedicated solely to providing heat for civilians. He emphasized that this assault constitutes another war crime by Russia. In response to the crisis, a restoration plan for the power plant has been formulated, and detailed technical inspections are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage.
Heating Crisis in Kyiv
This strike on energy infrastructure comes amid harsh winter conditions, underscoring the severity of the situation and the urgent need to resolve the heating supply problem for Kyiv's inhabitants. The war in Ukraine continues to have a devastating impact on civilian infrastructure, which in turn threatens the safety and well-being of the population, especially under extreme weather.
- Repairing the damaged facilities is now critically important to ensure the population's basic needs for heat and power are met.
