Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure Targeted in Overnight Assault

According to TSN.ua: In the early hours of 2026, Russia launched a strike against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, cutting power to eight regions during a severe cold snap. The attack occurred as temperatures plunged to -25°C (-13°F), creating a critical situation for thousands of consumers left without electricity and heating. This assault is part of a broader strategy to target civilian infrastructure during winter, a tactic that has been repeatedly condemned by international observers.

According to information from the company DTEK, the strikes hit power generation and distribution facilities in eight regions. The attacks specifically targeted combined heat and power plants (CHPPs) and thermal power plants (TPPs) that were operating in heating mode in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. In the capital, part of the Left Bank district was placed on emergency power cuts, while scheduled hourly blackouts were implemented on the Right Bank.

Critical Damage and Ongoing Efforts

One of DTEK's thermal power plants sustained particularly severe damage. Energy workers are doing everything possible to stabilize the power supply to the affected areas. The situation remains complex, as the sub-zero temperatures severely hinder rapid restoration efforts. The extreme cold not only increases demand for power but also makes repair work dangerous and slow.

This strike underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict and the compounding severity of winter weather conditions.

Power outages in major cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro have serious consequences for daily life, especially during a cold period when the need for heating is critical. Authorities and energy companies continue to work on restoring supply, but the situation demands swift and coordinated action to ensure the safety and basic comfort of the population.
