Russian Forces Target 'Druzhba' Oil Pipeline in Brody, 300 Responders Deployed.
Strike on the Brody Pumping Station
According to TSN.ua: On January 27, Russian military forces struck the Brody pumping station of the Druzhba oil pipeline, marking another assault on Ukraine's oil transport infrastructure. The attack prompted a massive emergency response, with approximately 300 rescue personnel and 90 pieces of equipment deployed to the site. A fire ignited by the strike continues to burn, and snow in the area has turned black from contamination by oxides.
Previous Incidents and Expert Commentary
This incident is part of a series of attacks on Ukrainian oil infrastructure. Last year, other facilities were also targeted, including:
- The Augustivka oil pumping station
- The terminal complex at the Pivdennyi (Southern) port
"The leadership of Ukrtransnafta does not always inform the public about such incidents," said expert Mykhailo Gonchar.
Gonchar noted that the transit of Russian energy resources no longer offers protection for Ukrainian infrastructure from attack. He also suggested that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán may have been advised to receive oil via tankers from Novorossiysk instead. The Druzhba pipeline has historically been a major conduit for Russian oil to Central and Eastern Europe, making these strikes strategically significant.
Consequently, the situation surrounding the Druzhba pipeline remains tense, with rescue services continuing their work in Brody to mitigate the attack's consequences.
The assault on the Brody station underscores Russia's ongoing campaign against Ukraine's critical infrastructure, posing severe risks to the country's energy security. Given the pattern of previous attacks on other facilities, monitoring the evolving situation and the response of Ukrainian authorities to these new aggressor-led challenges is crucial.
