Russian Strike on Sumy Damages Hundreds of Apartment Windows.
Sumy and Ukraine's Energy Grid Come Under Attack
According to TSN.ua: On February 3, Russian forces struck the city of Sumy, damaging approximately one hundred windows in residential buildings. According to acting Sumy mayor Artem Kobzar, the impact was recorded in the courtyard of an apartment block. Residents of nearby buildings also suffered damage to their windows. Civilian cars parked in the yard were damaged as well. This attack on a regional city underscores the ongoing threat to civilian areas far from the front lines.
Rescue workers, municipal, and emergency services are on the scene working to clear the damage. Preliminary reports indicate no deaths or injuries from this specific incident.
Massive Assault on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
Earlier, overnight into February 3, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine's energy system amid regional temperatures of -25°C (-13°F). This left hundreds of thousands of households without heating. Kyiv and the Kharkiv region were primary targets of the Russian strikes on energy facilities. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported targeted hits on combined heat and power plants (CHPPs) and thermal power plants (TPPs) in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. As a result, around 1,100 residential buildings in Kyiv's Dnipro and Darnytsia districts were left without heat.
It is worth noting that the attacks in Kyiv wounded six people, two of whom required hospitalization. To prevent damage to pipes from freezing, utility services drained water from the heating networks in the morning, as announced by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. These coordinated strikes represent a continued Russian strategy to weaponize winter against the Ukrainian population.
