New Geran-5 Missile-Drone Undergoes Trials

According to TSN.ua: Russian forces have begun testing a new missile-drone hybrid known as the Geran-5, which boasts extreme speed designed to bypass Ukrainian air defenses. Capable of reaching 500 to 600 km/h, this weapon poses a serious challenge to Ukraine's interceptors. According to Serhiy Beskrestnov, Ukrainian defenders have managed to down roughly 30% of enemy drones using anti-aircraft systems.

Technical Specs and Emerging Threats

The Geran-5's specifications are striking: it has a range of 800–850 km and carries a warhead weighing up to 850 kg. These features make it a significant threat to the Ukrainian military, especially since Ukrainian interceptors can only reach speeds of around 300 km/h—far too slow to effectively counter such a fast target.

Serhiy Beskrestnov: 'Our interceptors simply cannot fly faster than roughly 300 km/h.'

For context, Russia's Shahed jet-powered drones already operate at speeds of 280–320 km/h. There are also plans to increase the speed of these jet drones to 400 km/h, which would further complicate Ukraine's air defense efforts.

In the ongoing war in Ukraine, these new technologies highlight the steep challenges faced by Ukrainian troops. Despite these obstacles, Ukrainian forces have proven effective at intercepting a notable portion of enemy drones, demonstrating their adaptability and resilience.

The rapid development of drone technology has become a decisive factor in modern conflicts. The successful deployment of such systems not only threatens Ukraine's security but also demands constant upgrades to its air defense capabilities. How Ukraine responds—particularly by enhancing its anti-air systems—will be critical to national security amid escalating threats from the adversary.
